Caroline was the victim of the serial killer, Johann Otto Hoch. She was 36 years old at the time of her death.

She married first Adolph Hoch on April 18, 1885 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV. He died on July 7, 1892 at the age of 31 years in Wheeling, WV from heart disease, leaving her a widow.

The records reflect her first name as Karoline. She possessed a beautiful home, $900 in her bank account and a life insurance policy worth $2,500.

Approximately three years after the death of her husband, Karoline married Jacob Huff, whom she believed to be a wealthy saloon owner. The marriage ceremony was performed on April 18, 1895 in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV. by Rev. Herman C.A. Haas.

Jacob immediately began to poison Karoline with arsenic and she died less than two months after their marriage. The immediate cause of death noted by the physician was acute gastritis.

After Karoline's death, Jacob faked his own death by appearing to have drowned in the Ohio River and he fled Wheeling. Assuming Karoline's married surname of Hoch, he then changed his name to Johann Hoch.

Johann Hoch continued his scheme of marriage and poisoning of his wives until his arrest in Chicago, Illinois where he was ultimately hanged.
