Matthew Boxer was born on 27 Aug 1913 in Irkutsk, Russia. In 1923, then a 10 year old living in Irkutsk, the capital of Siberia, was awakened and told the family had to flee because the Reds were shooting White Russians on sight. They could not bring anything with them, only the clothes on their backs. It took nine months by ox cart, train, and foot to reach Shanghai. He was 17 when he came to the San Francisco from Shanghai on the vessel, Shanyu Maru.
Matthew married Marjorie C. Teffault on 15 Jul 1939 in San Francisco. After graduation from Heald Business College, Matthew owned a small appliance store.
Matt was an avid soccer fan and was a soccer official that held various positions on the San Francisco soccer scene. He served as president of the San Francisco Football Association and was Junior Soccer Commissioner for the USSFA. He managed the visits to California for a number of touring European teams and played a large role in gaining government support for the building of soccer facilities. Balboa Stadium in San Francisco was renamed the Matthew J. Boxer Stadium in his honor. He was Inducted into the Soccer Hall of Fame in 1961. In 1985 and 1986 he was President of the Millbrae Lion's Club and was also the Mayor of Millbrae, California.
