Max Holmes Castlebury, 85, of rural Plymouth, died at 2:20 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999 at his home.

He was born Dec. 25, 1914, in St. Mary Township to Glen and Lela (Holmes) Castlebury. He married Ethel Smith on May 25, 1940, in Springfield. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Elden and wife, Mary Lea Castlebury of Plymouth and Dennis and wife, Dixie Castlebury of Plymouth; and six grandchildren, Lisa Castlebury of Laurel, MD; Brian Castlebury of Carthage; and Jim, Jessica, and Jay Castlebury all of Carthage, and Carlee Jo Castlebury of Plymouth.

Mr. Castlebury was a retired farmer. He also taught business education at Grand Ridge for 10 yrs. and was principal and business education teacher at Bowen High School for 10 yrs. He graduated from Plymouth High in 1932 and graduated from Western Illinois University in 1936 and received his Master of Business Degree from the University of Colorado at Greeley.

He was a past board of directors member for the Hancock County Farm Bureau and trustee for St. Mary Township. He was also a past board member of Cain School and Plymouth School District. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, in the Hamilton Funeral Home in Plymouth with Rev. Phillip Hedgcock officiating. Burial was in Irwin Cemetery near Plymouth. Friends called at the Hamilton Funeral Home in the afternoon on Monday; a formal visitation for the family to meet with friends was from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials were made to Irwin Cemetery Association or the Plymouth American Legion.
