Fernie was the daughter of Aaron Curtis and Barbara Pletcher Vernon both of Ohio with siblings: Laura, Aaron Leroy, Henry H., Jesse, and Pearl B. Her sister, Pearl, worked as a housekeeper for the Lenir family and the Mitchell family was living in the same home. Forrest Mitchell married Fernie's older sister, Pearl, in 1901 and she died in 1907. Fernie then married Forrest Burton Mitchell on 28 August 1907 in Wood County at the age of 18, and they had Adrian and Forrest Jr. At the age of 22 years 7 months and 29 days, Fernie contracted tuberculosis from which she eventually died.
