Gene Johnson grew to adulthood at Milwaukie, Oregon. At 18 she began a 58-year marriage with Dick Large, a son of a former government Indian agent in Dakota Territory. He had settled with his parents in Marysville, Washington, in 1890 after his family's Dakota home burned to the ground during an Indian uprising commanded by Sitting Bull, the legendary Sioux chieftain. As a young man, Dick had enjoyed a brief career as a professional boxer and wrestler in Washington, and once held concurrent titles in both sports. The Larges lived at Hoquiam, Washington, where Dick served with the municipal fire department.
