Harriett Ann (nee Burch) Duke, 91, a resident of Annapolis for 53 years and previously of Baltimore, died March 4 at Kris Leigh Catered Living in Severna Park, after a long illness with cancer.

Harriett was born on October 20, 1920 in Baltimore to the late Colin F. Burch and Harriett Eleanor (Nellie) Burch. She graduated from St. Mary's Female Seminary in 1936. After attending business school in Baltimore, her first job was with the Internal Revenue Service. Later in her career, she was Administrator for the National Lathers Apprenticeship Program.

She had many fond memories of summers, with her cousins and family, at her grandparents farm "Denton" and her parents farm "Riverview," both in St. Mary's County.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother who found great pleasure in gardening, rooting her English boxwoods; sewing for her home and family; carpentry, bricklaying and anything else that needed to be done around her home.

She married John J. Duke, Jr. in 1942; they later divorced after 25 years of marriage.

Harriet was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Colin F. Burch, Jr. and Walter D. Burch and her long-time companion E. Robert Kent.

She is survived by her daughter, Anne Duke Adams; grandchildren, Jay T. Adams and Eleanor Burch Melograna; and great-granddaughter, Brianna Adams-Baxt.

The family will receive visitors from 3 to 5:30 p.m., Thursday, March 8, at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis, followed by a 6 p.m. service in the chapel.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9, followed by burial at All Saints Episcopal Church in Oakley. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Harriett's memory, to All Saints Episcopal Church, PO Box 307, Avenue, MD 20609 or the charity of your choice.
