James and Millie Newell were married May 28, 1878 in the Morning Start Township Mecklenburg County North Carolina. The family was living in the Morningstar Township in Mecklenburg county on the 1880 census. The family lived in Charlotte in the Victor Mill Village in 1896. They were living in the Alpha Mill Village in Charlotte in 1899. The 1900 census reports them living in the Waxhaw Mill Village, Waxhaw North Carolina. His family moved to Gastonia Gaston County North Carolina sometime around 1906. James son Yancey was married in Gastonia North Carolina in 1906. James lived in Gastonia until his death. His gravestone has not been located. His death certificate states he is buried at Long Creek Baptist Church.
