Mr. Turner was born Oct. 12, 1921, at Walton. He was raised in Newton, graduating from Newton High School. He served with the U.S. Army's Rainbow Division during World War II in the European Theater. He earned the rank of First Lieutenant and was discharged in 1944.
After his discharge, he began working for the Manhattan Army Store. He purchased the store in 1965 and renamed it T-H Western Brands, which he opertated until 1967. He then worked as an insurance agent for National Fidelity Life Insurance Company and later became a real estate agent and broker. For the last 20 years, he operated the M.Turner Company, a local real estate and appraisal company.
On September 15, 1940, he married Doris Hollis. She died December 22, 1983.
He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan Country Club, the Disabled American Veterans, American Association of Retired Persons and a past commander of American Legion Post No. 17. His professional memberships included the National Association of Independant Fee Appraisers, Manhattan Board Of Realtors, National Board of Realtors and the Kansas Association of Realtors.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Vicki Turner Bieberly and Karen Riat, both of Manhattan; one brother, Lester Turner, Fort Worth, Texas; two sisters, Opal Shurte, San Bernadino, California and Marjorie Musselman, McMinnville, Oregon and two grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Seven Dolors Catholic Church with the Revs. Lawrence Grennan and Keith Webber officating. The remains will be cremated and a private inurnment will be in Sunrise Cemetery.
Visitation is Sunday and Monday at Edwards-Yorgensen-Meloan Funeral Home.
Memorials may be given to the A.L.S. Society or the Sunset Zoo. Contributions may be left in care of the funeral home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue.
