Jesse Earl Long Jr., 87, of Madison passed away Sunday at his residence.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Athens chapel of Spry Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery with military and Masonic honors. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Tray Walden, Jim Hornaday, Andy Berryhill, Walter Edmund Daniels Jr., Stephen Douglas Daniel and Steve Romine.
Mr. Long was a lifetime member of Central Church of Christ, Fifth Marine Division Association, Iwo Jima Association of American, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans James L. Daniel Chapter 51, Order of the Eastern Star Athens Chapter No. 214, York Rite Masonic Bodies, Athens Masonic Lodge #16, Huntsville Cahaba Shriners Charter Member, Shriners International and Fraternal Order of Police T.L. Blakemore Lodge #6.
He was a World War II combat veteran having served with the Fifth Marine Division during Iwo Jima, earning a Silver Star. He was an auditor for Singer Sewing Machine Corporation, real estate and home construction, retired from the department of defense and was captain of the security force.
He graduated from Tanner High School, attended Auburn University and Athens State and graduated from Albright Business College of Decatur. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nettie Gertrude Daniel Long; father, Jesse Earl Long Sr.; uncle, James L. Daniel, who was the first World War II casualty from Limestone County; brother, Walter Thomas Long; and sister, Mildred Christine Long.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bettye Sue Owen Long; daughter, Bettye Lee Long-Walden; son-in-law, Tray Walden; granddaughter, Kate Walden; sister, Shirley Long Miller; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and loving caregivers, Lorene Anderson, Sheila Renfro, Penny Sanders, Doris Cannon, Julia Bynum, Dinah Lee, Jane Coley, Denise George and many more throughout the years.
