On 25 Oct 1880, Charles was granted a Certificate of Competency as Master Mariner (Certificate No: 98435). In the year of his death he had served aboard the SS Nigretia II (93802) as 2nd Mate. He died of consumption (tuberculosis) at sea as a passenger aboard the SS Oldham (94098), while traveling from Hamburg, Germany to Grimsby, England. His death certificate was issued at Grimsby and he was buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery, Liverpool, England on 4 Jan 1892.
