T. (Clayton) Stump of Staten WV (Calhoun County), to Marcellus Stump. Michael Stump IV was a surveyor, and he was sheriff of Lewis County VA for six years. He was elected Gilmer County surveyor on 24 MAR 1845, and he was also one of the first justices of the Gilmer County Court, serving in the capacity of justice of the peace for over 40 years. His name was included on the 1869 Voter Listing for the Sherman District of Calhoun County WV. He was reported to be 79 years old and born in Harrison County VA on this list.

Michael Stump married second widow Mary Rice, daughter of Henry and Alsa Bush, on 27 SEP 1867, in Calhoun County WV. The marriage record at West Virginia Vital Research Records, shows him as 80 and her as 60 years old.

By the time of the 1880 Census for Gilmer County WV, Mary has passed on and Michael was living with his grandson Mandeville B. Stump.
