Probably best to just leave Carney's birthplace blank and explain his birth place in his biography. Alabama was not a state until 1819 and not a territory until 1817 when it was created from the Mississippi Territory. Clarke County, Mississippi Territory was created in 1812, but James Daniel does not appear there until around 1814, as I recall. Before 1812 the region where Clarke County lies was part of the Tombigbee District, Mississippi Territory. That being said, it is not certain that James and Sarah Robinson Daniel were even in the Mississippi Territory in 1807. I have found some hints which suggest that James left Montgomery County, KY and moved to Ohio with his brothers, John and Thomas about 1806. The Robinson family seems to have come south from Ohio, as well, apparently having moved there from North or South Carolina.
