VALLEY, AL - Mrs. Dorothy Crowder Hodnett, 84, of Valley died peacefully at her home late Thursday afternoon, April 1, 2010.
Graveside services are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010, at Johnson Memorial Gardens in Valley with Dr. Kenneth Holt officiating.
Mrs. Hodnett is survived by her husband of 66 years, John Hodnett; one son, Byron (Leslie) Hodnett of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; one granddaughter, Lisa Hodnett (Chris) Richards of Matthews, NC; two great-granddaughters, Hannah Richards and Abby Richards, both of Matthews, AL; one sister, Joan Hammock of Valley, AL; and three nieces, Phyllis Crowder Chandler, Patsy Crowder Morris and Stephanie Hammock Thrift.
Born in Langdale, AL on Christmas Eve in 1925, Mrs. Hodnett was the daughter of the late Rube and Ida Crowder. After attending Valley High School, she married James B. "John" Hodnett in 1943.
As a war bride, she moved with her husband to Little Rock, AR, and Ozark, AL, until John was sent overseas. At that time, she returned to Langdale, where she gave birth to their son, Byron, in 1945. For the rest of her life, she was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend.
For many years, Dot worked for Interstate Telephone Company as a long distance operator and later for Valley Telephone Company in the Langdale business office. While living in Langdale, she was a member of Langdale Christian Church. After moving to LaGrange, GA in 1955, she was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in LaGrange. In early 2009, Dot and John moved back to Valley. "Miss Dot," as many friends knew her, was a wonderful southern cook. She had a very loving spirit and enjoyed sharing her hospitality with her many friends and family.
The family greatly appreciates the wonderful care given to Dot the last year of her life by Angie McGregor, Shelia Winston-Heard and Catherine Hutchinson.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Earl Crowder.
The family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Langdale Christian Church in her memory.
The family will receive friends briefly on Saturday, immediately following the graveside service.
Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home of Valley is handling arrangements.
