She previously lived with her daughter, Kathleen Cote in Williston, and prior to that lived with her daughter, Betty Lewis and son-in-law, Gary Lewis, in Shoreham.
She was born in Weston on Oct. 17, 1923, the daughter of Maude (Taft) and Frank L. Stevens.
She grew up on the family farm in Weston, attending a one-room schoolhouse. Moving to Springfield for high school, she lived with one of her elder sisters, graduating from Springfield High School in 1941. Grace entered Mary Fletcher School of Nursing in Burlington when she turned 18. After graduation she moved back to Springfield, and worked at Springfield Hospital in the operating room.
She married Edward W. Rice in September 1946, and they settled in Springfield.
Later, she worked as a private duty nurse and did relief nursing work in the town's machine shops. After several years, she became a school nurse in the Springfield School District. As her responsibilities at home lightened, she took more courses at the University of Vermont updating her nursing skills and joining the Visiting Nurses, where she worked until she retired. During her retirement she voluntarily cared for many people, including family and community members. Grace loved her family and relished in the celebration of life with them. She enjoyed baking, sewing, square dancing, knitting, crocheting, spending time playing cards and games with friends (Yahtzee and cribbage). She was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Springfield, taught Sunday School and was a Trustee and a Deaconess. In her later years, she joined the Vergennes Congregational Church. She was also active in several community organizations including, The "77" Club, Needlecraft Club, The Rebekahs, Quota Club, and Springfield Senior Center.
Surviving are her three children, Elizabeth (Betty) Lewis and her husband, Gary, of Shoreham, and their two daughters, Karen Beinhaur and her husband, Sean, of Concord, N.H., and Kelly Coyne and her husband, Mike, of South Windsor, Conn.; Roger E. Rice of Middlebury; and Kathleen R. Cote of Williston, and her three sons, Michael Cote of Chicago, Blake Cote of Wayne, Pa., and Blaise Cote of Washington, D.C.; and two great-grandsons, Colby and Nathan.
She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Edward, in 2003; as well as her 13 brothers and sisters.
A celebration of Grace's life will be held at the Vergennes Congregational Church on Monday, March 5, 2012, at 11 a.m., with a luncheon to follow.
A graveside/committal service will be held at a later date in Springfield.
