Elizabeth came with husband and children to Los Angeles where her sister and brother-in-law, Clara and George Shatto, had come in the late 1870's and were became very successful in business. George had been a marble dealer in Michigan, a family tradition of working with stone, and by 1900 was in the oil business.
The Whitneys suffered two tragedies within four years of each other, the death of their two children in 1904 and 1909. After Lizzie's death her widower, George, lived with his widowed sister Clara in Beverly Hills.
