Note: Surname in church records at Betting-les-Saint Avold is recorded as 'Hey', Nicholas himself did not record his name as 'Hei', as shown on his memorial stone. Nicholas married Mary Nimsgern, daughter of John Nimsgern and Suzanne Grill, on 4 May 1853 at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, McHenry County, Illinois. Nicholas was a miller by trade. Nicholas and Mary were the parents of twelve children, known children are: Nicholas, Susanna, Maria Helena "Mary", John, Anna "Jennie", Rosalia "Rose", William, Catharine and Edward (he later changed his name to George Friend). After Mary died, Nicholas married Anna Foster, nee Boucher, on 16 April 1910, in Kearney, Buffalo County, Nebraska ~
