James Louis Cooke, of Beaumont, passed way Thursday at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital, Beaumont.

A fifty-year resident of Beaumont, Dr. Cooke was an Electrical Engineer Professor at Lamar University. He was a United States Korean Conflict Army Veteran.

In 1956, he joined the Electrical Engineering Department at Lamar University. He later earned his doctorate at Northwestern University. He was the first President of the Faculty Senate at Lamar and was named a Regent's Professor, the highest honor that the University bestows on outstanding faculty. He served the University as Director of Graduate Studies from 1979 to 1982. He received a university-wide teaching award from Phi Kappa Phi in 1990. He did consulting work for Texaco, J&J Armature, and Gulf States Utilities. He retired from the department in December of 1991.

Survivors include his wife, Ina Cooke; daughters, Reverend Diane Cooke and her husband Jack Emerson and Linda Jansen and her husband Bernard; grandchildren, Katy Emerson, Joe Emerson, Patrick Jansen and Laura Jansen.

Funeral services at Broussard's, 1605 N. Major Drive, Beaumont. Graveside services at McLean Cemetery in McLean.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Sterling Crim, Euguene Cammack, Harry Mei, David Gates, Floyd Crum, and Joe Beaty.
