Henry enlisted May 3, 1861, in Co. F, 23rd NC Regiment, under Capt. M. L. McCorkle in Newton. He served as a wagon master from October 1861 until admitted November 11, 1861, to Chimborazo Hospital # 1 in Richmond, Virginia. He was discharged December 13, 1861. He rejoined his unit at Manassas Junction, VA; was promoted April 27, 1862, to Ordnance Sergeant; was a hospital Steward until October 1862 when wounded in the fighting in Virginia and furloughed home. He was sent to the hospital on a surgical certificate in November 1862.
He married Malinda Finger on August 24, 1846, in Catawba County, NC.
