James was born in Ireland and migrated to Quebec, Canada in 1832. "He arrived in Quebec, Canada after a 4 week voyage from Ireland on the 'Europe'. After arriving in Quebec, he took a skiff accross Lake Ontario and arrived in America at Youngstown, New York".

James and his wife, Eliza Lane, were joined in Marriage sometime between 1832 and 1835 in Lockport, Niagara, New York. They had five daughters and four sons during their marriage. Their 1st and 2nd child, both daughters, died at very young ages and their names are unknown to me. Next came in this birth order, John, Mary, William, James, Maria, Robert and Alice.

After the death of Eliza, James married a 2nd time. James and Mary Bradley were united in Marriage on January 17, 1863 in Wauconda, Lake, Illinois. They had also had seven daughters and five sons during their marriage. They were in the following birth order; Ida, Caroline, Etta, Frederick, Edward, William J., Lillian, Jessie, Violet, Kate, Arthur and Harry. William J was named after his 1/2 brother William who had died recently before his birth. Lillian, Violet, Kate, and Harry all died sometime before their father.
