John Henry Meigs was the son of Mary Elizabeth Freeman (1/16 Cherokee) and John Ross Meigs, son of Return Jonathan Meigs & Jane Ross, daughter of Chief John Ross.

He had the following siblings: Florien N., Timothy Walker, Benjamin F., Mary Jane, and Cooie Meigs.

He married and is buried beside Elinor Margaret Boudinot (1/4 Cherokee, buried at Citizens) daughter of William Boudinot and Caroline Fields.

They had the following children: Carolyn Meigs Linder (buried at Citizens), Charles Ross Meigs (buried at Citizens), Elinor Boudinot Meigs (buried at Citizens); John Cornelius Meigs, Return Jonathan Meigs, and Annie Stapler Meigs (buried at Citizens).

He is listed in Starr's "History of the Cherokee Indians," p. 327; and in the "Cherokee Cavalier" as Jack Meigs; Blood: 1/8 Cherokee, Starr's Notes: C821.
