J. William Van Slochem, 90, formerly of Broomall, died peacefully surrounded by his family at Willow ­Valley on Wednesday, February 29, 2012.

He was a resident of Willow Valley for 18 years.

Mr. Van Slochem was a decorated veteran of the US Army and served during WWII. He was a 1st Sergeant of a combat motorcycle detachment. He landed on Omaha Beach for the invasion of Normandy and received a Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge.

Mr. Van Slochem studied engineering at New York University and worked as a Vice President of the Binswanger Corporation of Philadelphia for 38 years.

He was a Past President of the Institute of Engineers (IOE) of Philadelphia and a long-time officer of Building Owners and Managers Association.

For over 45 years, he was a member and Trustee of the Marple Presbyterian Church.

More recently, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, PA.

He served many years as Scoutmaster for Broomall Boy Scout Troop and Explorer Post 151.

He took great pride in mentoring young men and sharing his skills.

An avid fisherman, he enjoyed cooking and oil painting. He was an inventor and master craftsman who was best known at Willow Valley for his intricate Ginger Bread houses and decorative Ukrainian Easter eggs.

In his later years, he most enjoyed learning the latest computer technologies and digital ­photography.

Mr. Van Slochem is survived by his wife, Ruth Zeiset (Martin) Van Slochem of Willow Valley; two sons, and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death in 1974 by his first wife, Anne (Edsberg) Van Slochem.

The funeral service will be on Friday, March 2, 2012, at 11 AM in the Bachman Funeral Home, 7 South Decatur Street, Strasburg, PA.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11 AM.

Interment in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall, PA.
