Stephan graduated from Jesuit High School with honors. He received numerous academic scholarships to college, but ultimately chose the University of South Florida where he was majoring in chemistry; his ultimate goal was to become a college chemistry professor. Stephan participated in the Boy Scouts of America, Pack 23 and Troop 4. During his 10-year involvement, he inspired countless other scouts do to his leadership abilities, which included the top elected position of Senior Patrol Leader. Stephan ultimately achieved the pinnacle of scouting, the Eagle Scout Rank. Stephan was also involved in giving back to his community through generous service to the public. He devoted hundreds of hours of his time volunteering in various capacities throughout the community, while also lending his academic skills as a math tutor at Jesuit. Through all of these many achievements, he is most remembered for his work ethic, his compassion and kindness toward others, particularly toward his brother Chris; he is also remembered for his gentleness with animals and his overall respect for nature and life. He will be forever loved and missed by those whose lives he touched. Our thoughts and prayers are with Stephan's surviving family to include his loving parents, Michael and Nancy Gruendel; brother Christopher; grandmother Clarajo Hurley, Uncles and Aunts; Doug and Jeff Gruendel, Holly and Greg Gruendel, Rodger and Susi Stephan; step-grandmother Gail Stephan, and cousin Taylor Gruendel. Stephan has been reunited in Heaven with his grandparents Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Stephan, Richard Hurley and Dr. Donald Peter Gruendel.
