Edith Johnson 1923-2019
Edith Austin Bastin Johnson, 96, of Hustonville, Kentucky passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2019. Born in New Salem, KY on September 11, 1923 to the late Jason Austin and Pearl Walls Austin. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church in New Salem, KY. She was a member of The Austins, a gospel group, enjoyed making quilts and loved to work puzzles. During her life Edith started working at Cowden's Manufacturing in Stanford, KY, she then opened and operated McKinney Variety Store in 1963, followed by working at Liberty Sportswear for a brief time.
Survivors include one son, Michael Bastin (Nicki); three daughters, Nellie Reed (Dale), Pennie Robbins (Carl), Veda Poynter (Don); one brother, Kenneth Austin (Donna); one sister, Shirley Maples (Freeman); three step-daughters, Judy Loveless, Kathy Na- pier (Gary) and Connie Taylor; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Carlos Bastin; her second husband, Orville Johnson; six brothers, Arnold Austin, Eugene Austin, Glen Austin, Jason Austin, Jr., Orville Austin and Donald Austin; two sisters, Alma McWhorter and Betty Sims; one grand- son, Todd Smith and two great-granddaughters, Cassie Smith and Isabella Berry.
A visitation has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 4, 2019 from 5 to 8 p.m. at New Salem Baptist Church in New Salem, KY. Funeral will be on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 11 a.m. at New Salem Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Lockard and Bro. Ron Click o ci- ating the service. Burial will follow at New Salem Cemetery.
Active Pallbearers are Kent Ellis, Scott Ellis, Michael Wayne Smith, and Jim Bastin.
Honorary Pallbearers are Larry McWhorter and Johnny Luster.
