Lawrence J. Reilly, 94, of Baytown, TX was born February 21, 1918 in Jersey City, NJ to Joseph E. and Sarah Murphy Reilly and passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown following a brief illness.

In 1920 Lawrence moved with his father and mother to Baytown where his father was a member of the construction and start up team for the new Humble Oil Refinery. His father later was selected as the refinery's first Mechanical Manager.

Lawrence attended and was a member of the first graduating class of Baytown's Robert E. Lee High School in 1935. Golf played a very large roll in Lawrence's life, and he excelled at the game which was taught to him at an early age by his mother, Sarah. At age 16 as a junior in high school, Lawrence won The Houston City Amateur tournament which was then played at Hermann Park Golf Course. It was quite a feat for a sixteen year old and made even more remarkable by his finishing as runner up in the same tournament the previous year at age 15.

Lawrence began his college career at Rice University, and later transferred to the University of Colorado where he received a degree in chemical engineering. As a member of the University golf team he distinguished himself as an outstanding player. He was subsequently presented the prestigious Golf Legends award by the University's Sports Hall of Fame.

It was while at the University that he met his lovely wife of 57 years, Helen Marie Neithammer from Casper, WY. Following graduation Lawrence moved back to Baytown and began his forty-one year career with Humble Oil and Refining as a chemical engineer. Four years later he transferred from engineering to the Employee Relations Department. During his tenure in that department, Lawrence spent many years traveling to college campuses recruiting new engineers for Humble Oil. It was because of his active role in recruitment that he was awarded an Honorary Degree in Chemical Engineering by Georgia Tech University. He finished his career at Exxon as Labor Relations Coordinator in 1983.

Lawrence always played an active roll in community organizations. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, past president of the Baytown Kiwanis Club, active in the United Way of Baytown Area, an advocate of the Adult Literacy Program and past president of Sterling Municipal Library, and a charter member of Goose Creek Country Club where he spent many hours on the golf course.

Lawrence highly valued his long term association with The Methodist Hospital System. In 1964 he became a member of the Board of Trustees at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown. In 1981 he was named Chairman of the Board of Trustees at San Jacinto. In 1996 he was named vice chairman of the Board of Directors San Jacinto Methodist Hospital/The Methodist Hospital. He retained those positions until his death. Lawrence took much pride in the quality of medical care provided by San Jacinto Hospital to the citizens of Baytown and surrounding areas. Many of his closest personal relationships were with the medical and administrative staff at the hospital. In his humble opinion, they were the "Best in the Business."

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Sarah; his loving wife of 57 years, Helen; his sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Oliver and Anna "Nanny" Fourier; and his youngest son, Kevin Mark Reilly. He is survived by his daughter, Joan Reilly Kraft and husband Jake of Tallahassee, FL; sons, Lawrence J. "Mickey" Reilly, Jr. and wife Jennifer of the Woodlands, Charles Reilly and wife Debi of Spring, and Jeffrey Reilly of Baytown; grandchildren, Tim and Andy Kraft, Stephen Reilly and wife Monica, Melissa Reilly Daniel and husband Cody, Robert, Brenna, Evan, and Kelly Reilly, Kate Reilly Hansen and husband John, and Timothy and Benjamin Reilly; and six great grand children.
