Colonels Reunited – Base Boasts Flying Brothers
By a Staff Representative
LARSON AIR FORCE BASE, March 14.—Two Kalberer brothers, both full colonels, are assigned at Larson Air Force Base.
The arrival of Col. Klem F. Kalberer has brought about the unusual circumstance, probably the only such situation in the Air Force.
Klem’s older brother, Col. Karl H. Kalberer, is eight years his senior and has been at the base for several years.
Only sons of an Army officer, Klem and Karl have never been assigned at the same base before.
Rides Exchanged
Karl gave Klem his first airplane ride in a Curtis Falcon in 1929. Klem gave Karl his first jet ride at Larson about four years ago. Now in question is a helicopter ride to be provided by the older Kalberer brother.
Klem is assigned to the Air Defense Command and arrived at Larson recently. Karl is with the Military Air Transport Service. Both are vice commanders of their respective units.
Klem was born in New York and Karl in Salt Lake City. Klem’s wife, Hazel, was born in Texas and they were married there. Karl’s wife, Letha, was born in Missouri and they were married in Connecticut. Their son, Karl III, was born in Portland.
Klem has three children, the oldest, Klem Jr., is a fourth classman (freshman) at the Air Force Academy. The cadet was born at Fort Bragg, N.C.; Larry at Camp Cook, Calif., and Karen at Hamilton Field, Calif.
The brothers have flown 70 different types of aircraft and have 17,000 hours flying time.
During World War II Klem was a P-51 fighter pilot. Karl has flown primarily multiengine type aircraft.
Karl enlisted from Cressy Field, San Francisco, in 1928. Klem enlisted from Hamilton in 1938.
They list their preservice home as Lafayette, Ind.
A cousin who outranks them, Maj. Gen. Alfred F. Kalberer, is vice commander of the Continental Air Command, Mitchel Air Force Base, N.Y.
