Peter was the only child of Patrick and Mary (Boles) Egan. His parents immigrated separately to New York from Ireland where they met and married.

Peter was born in New York's Upper East Side and raised Catholic. He was Baptized at St. Vincent Ferrer on March 8, 1891, He attended school at St. Jean's French Brother's School and his 1st Holy Communion was taken at St. Jean The Baptiste on April 2, 1903. Shortly thereafter, he and his mother traveled by train from New York to Los Angeles to join his father who had gone ahead to find work.

Peter first married in 1913 to Maud Torrence, who died in January 1916, without children. In 1921, after his service in the army, he married Sylvia Faye Strohmeyer, who died five days after giving birth to his only child, a daughter, that he raised as a single parent. Significantly later, in the early 1940's, he married his third wife, Virginia Mc Dougall. They were together until he died in 1975.

During his working years he worked first (with his father) as a brick layer, but, at his father's suggestion, he became a plumber. Later he worked for and retired from the Standard Oil Company as a pipe fitter.
