Philadelphia Inquirer; January 16, 1880;
"Mr. Stephen T. Souder died yesterday, aged forty one. He was the eldest son of the late Edmund A. Souder, a former prominent merchant and ship owner of this city, He was a native of Philadelphia, educated at the Protestant Episcopal Academy. In 1863 He entered in business with his father, under the firm name of E. A. Souder & Co., Archibald Getty, Esq., being the only surviving partner. The firm of E. A. Souder & Co., (the second co-partnership of that name) became involved and went out of business. His father died in 1868[sic; 1873]. After the withdrawal from business here, Stephen T. went to Charleston, S. C., engaged in business there for several years, and returned here and entered into the book publishing business, and, after a hard struggle, commenced to prosper. Some four months ago he was attacked with cerebral troubles, and gradually declined in health. His disease was largely attributable to litigation arising from complications growing out of the old firm. He married a daughter of Th. H. Vetterlein, and she survives him with eight children. His funeral will take place in St. Mary's P. E. Church, West Philadelphia, next Monday morning and the interment will be in Woodlands Cemetery."
