Florence Brenner Walner was born in Philadelphia Aug. 19, 1904 to Jessie and Harry Brenner and was one of five girls and four boys. She was predeceased by her sisters, Esther, Sarah, Nettie and Re and her brothers, Ben, William, Ted and Moe. Her family will mourn her death. They include her daughter and son-in-law, Libbie and Albert Kaplan and their son Jay Allan Kaplan. She was predeceased by her loved and loving granddaughter, Janis Lynn Kaplan. She also leaves her son, Allan Bernstein and his children Michael and Sharon and Sherry Lynn and their families. When Florence married Aaron Salzberg, she became a loving member of his family. She was devoted to Joyce and Leon of blessed memory and Gail and Charles of blessed memory and to Norman. She became Nana to their children, who were loving and attentive. She will be missed by her sister-in-law, Jeanette Brenner who was married to William Brenner of blessed memory. On April 22, 2010 Florence experienced the thrill of a lifetime. She attended a class lecture in literature at Virginia Wesleyan College. She said it was a dream of a lifetime come true. She made a lasting impression on the entire population of Virginia Wesleyan College. Florence Walner was a member of Congregation Beth El, a lifetime member of Hadassah and of Hebrew Ladies Charity. The family extends their appreciation to the staff at The Home at Beth Sholom Village and Heartland Hospice for the kind and excellent care offered to Florence. A graveside funeral will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Sunday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m. by Rabbi Arthur Ruberg and Cantor Elihu Flax. Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Janis Lynn Kaplan Fund for the Developmentally Delayed, Jewish Family Service, c/o Mrs. Sue Graves, 260 Grayson Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23462; Beth Sholom Home, 6401 Auburn Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23464; Congregation Beth El, 422 Shirley Ave., Norfolk, VA 23517; or to a charity of your choice. NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - It's nearing the end of the semester at Virginia Wesleyan
College , but that's not stopping one student from showing up to class.
105-year-old Florence Walner, who is young at heart, never got a chance to go to
college; that was until she stepped onto the Virginia Wesleyan campus. A program
at Beth Sholom Village in Virginia Beach, where Walner lives, helps to make
wishes come true for its residents.
"It's going to be different," Walner said. "I'm going to college. I didn't have
a chance when I was younger, but now I do."
To put Walner's age in perspective, the centenarian was born almost 60 years
before Virginia Wesleyan ever opened its doors. She was born in 1904, a year
after the Wright brothers made their first flight, eight years before the
Titanic sank, decades before the television was invented.
"I'm glad you are here," Assistant Professor of English Dr. Rebecca Hooker said
to Walner. After meeting her professor the first class began: English, a class
that is a lot to take in for any student.
"It didn't phase me at all," Walner said.
Armed with the tools of knowledge, the day rolled on.
"I think she had a great time and she looked really happy," said student
Kimberly Berger.
"I'm so happy we were able to make her dream come true," Dr. Hooker added. "It
was really a privilege."
College President Billy Greer was also glad to welcome Walner to campus.
"I wish I could turn you loose on all of our students and have you talk to
them," he said. "I bet you could tell them a few things."
Later, the day ends, and a life-long wish is fulfilled.
"It's beautiful," Walner added. "It's beautiful to look at."
Walner is the oldest resident at Beth Sholom Village. She will turn 106 in
August.
