COLUMBUS, GEORGIA- Merle Gibson McWhirter, 97, died Sunday, February 26, 2012, at her residence following a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Samuel J. Gibson and Edna Earl Hegler Gibson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Mode Sisson McWhirter; brother Roy Lee Gibson; and sisters Lois Earline Gibson and Irma Grace Sherman.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 28 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church Turner Chapel with a private burial to follow at Park Hill Cemetery. The Reverends Helen Berenthien and Robert Beckum will officiate. Visitation will be held in the chapel at the Covenant Woods Retirement Home on Woodruff Farm Road on Monday, February 27 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Merle was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Shaw Sunday School Class since its inception in 1945. She was also a founding member of Missionary Circle Four where she served as president and Bible leader and remained a member until it recently disbanded.
She was a graduate of Andrew College and Georgia State College for Women, now Georgia College and University in Milledgeville, Georgia.
She was a retired Muscogee County school teacher, a founding member of the local chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for Women Educators, a member of the George Walton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a former member of the Medical Center Auxiliary. She and her husband also delivered lunches for the Meals on Wheels program for over 25 years.
Merle is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William R. and Ann McWhirter of Columbus; grandsons William R. McWhirter, Jr. of Columbus and Robert K. McWhirter of Wytheville, Virginia; great-grandchildren Sophia and Thomas McWhirter of Columbus and Noah McWhirter of Wytheville, Virginia; niece Nancy Ramsey and husband Jack of The Woodlands, Texas, and their family.
The family would like to thank the staff at VistaCare Hospice for their professionalism and kindness during the final weeks of Merle's life.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made to the Meals on Wheels program or to a favorite charity .
