GEORGE ASHWORTH: - March 7, 1994

George Ashworth, 82, former Superintendent of the Metropolitan School District of Mount Vernon, died Sunday morning at his home.

He received a bachelor's degree from Indiana State University,where he received the Bigwood Award as most valuable football player in 1934 and the Hines Medal awarded to the graduating varsity athlete with the highest scholastic standing in 1935. He received a master's degree from Indiana State University in 1948.

Active in coaching and education, he coached at Indiana State University and several high schools, where his teams won several championships. In 1958, The Champaign, Ill., News Gazette named him "Illinois High School Coach of the Year."

He became superintendent of the Metropolitan School District of Mount Vernon in 1968 and held that position until his retirement in 1978.

In 1979, he was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, and in 1982 was inducted into the Mount Vernon High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

He was honored by the University of Southern Indiana with an honorary doctor of laws degree at his retirement.

Continuing an active civic life after his retirement, he served as president of the Mount Vernon High School Building Corp., was a member of the Metropolitan School District Scholarship Committee and was active in the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce, where he served on the joint committee with the Evansville Chamber of Commerce for Southwestern Indiana Industrial Development.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a member and past president of the Board of Trustees, a member of Mount Vernon Masonic Lodge and a life member of Mount Vernon Elks Lodge.

Surviving are two sons, J. Michael Ashworth of Mount Vernon and Robert A. Ashworth of Wichita, Kan.; a sister, Mae H. Ashworth of Reston, Va.; and six grandchildren, Jason, Mark, Anne, Nathan, John and Kinsey Ashworth.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Helen Lackey.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, with burial in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to First United Methodist Church, Posey County Community Foundation or Alexandrian Public Library.
