Son of Catharina Langehennig Luhrsen and George Luhrsen, Sr. Twin to Paul Gerrard Luhrsen.

Gus was born in Buckley, Illinois to George and Catharina (Langehennig) Luhrsen. His twin brother died as an infant and their mother died when he was 3. Gus's father married Betty Yates some time after. Gus and two of his brothers moved to Little Rock, Arkansas to live with his Aunt Sophia and Uncle Henry, where he worked on the railroad. Some years later he came to live in St. Louis, where he worked as a switchman, spending the rest of his life there. He had nine children, eight of whom survived him.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch obituary from 19 July 1949, pg 7B reads:

Luhrsen, Gustav A., 5010 Alcott, asleep in Jesus, suddenly, Sun. July 17, 1949, 9:50 p.m., beloved husband of Mrs. Minnie Luhrsen (nee Bruegger), dear father of Mrs. E. Wiedner, Mrs. G. Nelson, Mrs. N. Russo, Mrs. H. Lawson, Dolores, Gustav W., Leonard E. and Donald Luhrsen, dear stepson of Mrs. Bettie Luhrsen, our dear brother, father-in-law, brother-in-law, grandfather, uncle, nephew and cousin, in his 67th year.

Body will lie in state after 3 p.m. Tues. at Beiderwieden Funeral Home, 1936 St. Louis av., and until 8:30 a.m. Thurs. Services same day, 10 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, Twenty-first and Benton. Interment New Bethlehem Cemetery. Deceased was a member of Concordia Aid Association, Branch No. 1, and Switchmen's Union of North America.
