Allen Francis Kerwin, 62, of Portsmouth, RI, born in Colchester, Vermont on November 19, 1948, died peacefully in his sleep at the Rhode Island Veteran's Home in Bristol, RI, early on Sunday morning, September 18, 2011.

In 1968, Allen served as a Corpsman in the United State Navy during the Vietnam War. During this time, he was awarded a Bronze Star in recognition for his courage in saving the lives of others.

In his earlier years, Mr. Kerwin contributed to his community by working as a firefighter for the Naval Base in Newport, and was also employed by the United States Postal Service. In addition, he was a Portsmouth Soccer Coach and a Newport County Hockey Coach. He enjoyed volunteering for Outward Board with his fellow Vietnam Veterans. A lover of the outdoors and the various aspects of nature throughout his life, Allen had a passion for photography and open spaces.

He leaves behind Donna Marie Kerwin, his wife of 37 years, his son Christopher Allen Kerwin, both of Portsmouth, and his daughter, Rebecca Lyn Kerwin, of Middletown. In addition, he is survived by three grandsons: Bobby C. Cody, Hayden P. Kerwin, and Austin M. Cody, as well as his mother, Norma Kerwin, his sister, Linda Giroux, and his brother, Kevin Kerwin. His father, Herbert Kerwin, passed away in September 2010.

Considering his giving of himself to his country and his surpassing doctors expectations in his last years of his life, truly, Allen Kerwin was a fighter in every sense of the word.

Funeral services will be held at RI Veteran's Home in Bristol, 480 Metacom Avenue, Bristol, RI on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Veteran's Home in Bristol will be appreciated.
