Robert was the son of John Carter & Elizebeth Smith, from the notable Virgina Carter family.

Robert was an early St. Joseph settler, coming to Missouri in 1857 from Kentucky.

He was the husband of Elvira Esther Parks, and father of Dr. Horace Metcalf Carter, Arthur Parks Carter, Jane Elizbeth (Carter) Nash, James Emery Carter, Laura Frances (Carter) Hughes, Mary Edelie (Carter) Hall, Rachel Esther (Carter) Hosea & Robert Mason Carter.
