BRETTA RILEY BELL

About three weeks ago Mrs. Bretta Bell was taken sick at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Sickels of Litchfield. The doctor was called and she seemed to be better for a time though she did not gain in strength as they expected her to do. During the last few days of her life she gradually grew weaker each day, and on Monday night she dropped into a peaceful sleep from which she did not waken here; her soul took its flight to her eternal home in the early hours of the morning.
Her life was an unselfish one; she busied herself thinking of others and helping them in the hour of need, doing practical nursing since her husband's death. She lived a devoted Christian life and was a member of the Methodist church in Litchfield. She sought the Lord in early youth and found him a constant source of help and strength throughout her life.
Bretta Riley Bell was born at Avoca, Iowa on Jan. 7, 1866 and departed this life on Oct. 24, 1934 at the age of 68 Yr., 9 Mo. and 17 days.
The first seventeen years of her life were spent at home with her parents on a farm near Avoca, Iowa. She attended the district school there and in the year 1883 came with her parents to Goffs, Kansas.
On Dec. 29, 1885 she was united in marriage at Seneca, Kans.[sic] to a friend of her girlhood days, Mr. Henry Lee Bell of Loup City, Nebr.
They began their wedded life on a farm near Loup City, which place has been their home the greater part of their married life.
To this union were born two children a son and a daughter. Her husband preceded her in death Aug. 31, 1924.
Those who mourn her going are her son, John of Loup City and her daughter, Mrs. Emma Sickles of Litchfield; three sisters and four brothers, Mrs. W.E. Annable of Alliance, Nebr., Mrs. Hattie Stanton of Nesperse, Idaho, Mrs. J.J. Herrington and C.F. Riley of Worley, Idaho, H.B. Riley of Colorado Springs, Frank Riley of Lewiston, Idaho, W.E. Riley of Goffs, Kans.; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild besides many friends.
A short funeral service was held at the home of her son John Bell of Loup City with further services at the Methodist church there, Rev. E.W. Price of Litchfield conducting the services assisted by Rev. Carter of Loup City. A mixed quartette sang the following numbers: "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," "The Old Rugged Cross." Burial beside her husband in the Loup City Cemetery.
