STATESBORO - Mr. C.F. "Clem" Raith, age 85, died early Thursday at his residence. He was a native of Smithton, Pa. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as an infantry sergeant, and was wounded at Nuremburg, Germany, during WWII. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge.
He was married to Jane Wilt on August 28, 1943. Mr. Raith was employed by Rockwell Mfg. Co. and Emerson Electric Co. for 46 years. He moved to Statesboro in 1956 as part of the Startup Cadre for Rockwell Mfg. and retired in 1986 as the plant manager of the Brooks Instrument Division of Emerson Electric Co. in Statesboro.
His activities in community affairs included past president of the Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce and a recipient of the Business Leader of the Year Award, past president of the Georgia Southern Foundation, chairman of the Site Selection and Startup for Ogeechee Technical Institute, where he also served as the first president of the board; past member of the board of directors of the American Red Cross, past director of Joseph's Home for Boys, member and past president of the Statesboro Lions Club, member and past director of the Statesboro Rotary Club and recipient of the Rotary Citizen of the Year Award. He served several terms on the board of directors of St. Matthews Catholic Church, past member of the board of directors of Forest Heights Country Club and was awarded the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award in 1989 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990.
Mr. Raith was dedicated to his family and his community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Wilt Raith.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Frank Dennis Raith and his wife, Mary Raith of Aiken, S.C., and Charles David Raith and his wife, Elizabeth Raith of Brooklet; one daughter, Marsha Jane Raith of Statesboro; five grandchildren, Stacie Besier (Todd) of Statesboro, Arnie Raith (Tracey) of Cumming, Ga., John Daniel Raith of Valdosta, Chad Raith (Ansley) of Vancouver, Canada, and Mindy Brown (Lee) of Bethpage, Tenn.; seven great-grandchildren, Ellen, Ethen and Anson Besier, Maggie and Hamlin Raith, Addie and Ellee Brown; and his loving and devoted brother, Harry Raith of Statesboro.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with the Rev. Chad Raith officiating. A private family entombment will be in the Bulloch Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
