A baker by profession, he was 49 years old and came from Newcastle on Tyne, England. 573 of the passengers were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints and were under the direction of William Glover who was returning from his mission to England. Thomas had been baptized 2 days before, on March 29, 1855. (From Britain to Zion -- The Sutherland Saga)

Came to Utah in Abraham O. Smoot Company 1856. (Per LDS historical site) He came 7 years before his wife Mary Ann. Family records indicate he left with the fourth company led by Captain Richard Ballantyne on July 1, 1855. 6 months later (Apr 1856) he was called on a European mission
