On March 31, 1855, Thomas Sutherland, having previously put down a deposit of one pound, set sail for Philadelphia on the Juventa with 473 adults and 103 children. A baker by profession, he was 49 years old and came from Newcastle on Tyne, England. 573 of the passengers were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints and were under the direction of William Glover who was returning from his mission to England. After his wife Annie died, he went to live with his sons in Silver City, Utah.
