George was born to Lewis and Amelia (Albright) Pertain in 1887 as their fourth of eight children.

He enlisted in the Army on Sep. 1 1908 and was honorably discharged on Aug 21, 1911. His enlistment record indicated he had blue eyes and was 5 feet, 5.5 inches tall. He listed his civilian occupation as a carpenter.

He was married to Irene E. Curley in 1914. They had their first child, Herbert, in 1915. Their second child, Charlotte, arrived in 1918. His wife Irene died in 1935. The New York 1915 census listed him as a manager of a restaurant at this time.

George was later married to Celia Mary Kane. Their is no record of children of this marriage. At some time after 1940, they had moved to California.

George died at the age of 79, in Orange County.
