Father Founded Local Brewery 100 Years Ago

Hubert Hartmann, 84, former head of the old Star Brewery here, died at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon at Los Angeles, Calif.; according to word received by local relatives.
The brewery which is now the Star-Peerless Brewery Company was founded 100 years ago this year by Mr. Hartmann's father, Bernhard Hartmann. After the death of Mr. Hartmann's father the brewery was owned by Hubert Hartmann and his brothers, Hans, Herman, Bernhard and the late Rolf Hartmann.
Mr. Hartmann moved to California about 1925, shortly after the brewery was sold.
Born in Belleville, Sept. 1, 1869, he was a son of the late Bernhard and Anna Berg Hartmann. He married Hanna Baldus here 43 years ago. She survives.
Besides his wife, Mr. Hartmann is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Julia Rickinger, of San Gabriel, Calif., whose twin sister, Johanna, died in infancy; a step-son, Arthur Baldus, of Lincoln, Neb.; three brothers, Hans Hartmann, 1811 East B street; Herman Hartmann, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Bernhard Hartmann, of Washington, D. C.; and three sisters, Mrs. Hugo Wangelin, 416 North Church Street; Mrs. Louisa Lawrence, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Herman C. Stoffregen, of St. Louis.
Also surviving are two grandchildren, Ramona and Rosalie Rickinger, and three step-grandchildren, Arthur Baldus Jr. and Johnnie Hartmann Baldus and Mrs. Elsie Baldus Day.
A step-son, Elmer H. Baldus, died in 1945. His widow, Mrs. Marie Baldus, lives in Belleville.
Funeral services and burial will be held tomorrow in Los Angeles.
