At the time the 1880 Census was taken, Martha was living with her uncle and aunt, Henry and Lydia Spilman (who were 22 and 17, respectively) in Highland, Guthrie Co., IA. Marys obituary stated she had been ill for some time, so perhaps Martha was sent away to avoid being exposed to a disease, or perhaps to avoid the trauma of having a second mother die, which Mary did on 2 Mar 1881. Dr. Spilman married a third time to Alice Sellers on 29 Dec 1886. In the 1895 Iowa Census, Martha was living with Dr. Spilman and his wife.
Martha married Harry Orville Bowen on 2 May 1899 in Ottumwa, Wapello Co., IA. They were living at 201 Albany, Ottumwa when the 1900 Census was taken. Martha was a dressmaker and Harry was a packing house clerk.
They were living at 2326 Keesling St., Bellingham, Whatcom Co., WA in 1910. She had sons Eugene, Robert and Harold, and daughter Laura. Harry worked for a wholesale grocery. The family was still in Bellingham in 1914 when her fathers biography was published. They were at 938 Jefferson, Eugene, Lane Co., OR, when the 1920 Census was taken. The family consisted of Harry, 41, born IA, Martha, 44, born IA, Eugene, 18, born IA, Ethel May, 15, born WA (this may be an error), Harold, 14, born Iowa, Laura, 12, born WA, Martha, 7, born WA. Harry was a wholesaler.
At some point, the family moved to the Los Angeles area. Harry died in 1924 in CA. Martha was listed as widowed and living in Pasadena in 1930.
