John T. Harrell, Jr., died Dec. 14, 2004, at Wheatland Nursing Center, Russell, at the age of 86. The son of John T. Harrell, Sr., and Catherine Marie Murphy, he was born
Sept. 16, 1918, at Paradise. He grew up in the Paradise area and attended schools there, graduating from Paradise High School in 1934. He attended Ft. Hays State College for one year and then completed his education at Kansas State University, receiving a degree in business and accounting. He later completed his MBA at Ft. Hays State College. He served in the United States Army from August 1841 until his honorable discharge in February 1946, having been promoted from the rank of captain to the rank of major. He was married to Doris Zelma Wright, January 16, 1943, in Indianapolis, Ind. He returned to the Paradise community after his service in World War II, and worked with his father in the Harrell Hardware and Implement Company, Paradise, for many years, until 1969. He then began a 20 year career with the Russell State Bank as trust officer. He did investment work for others for many years and worked for the United National Bank of Russell and Natoma as a trust officer in later years, until his retirement in 2000. He also had served as a bookkeeper for the Paradise School Board for many years. He was a former member of the Paradise United Methodist Church, and currently had been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Russell. He also was a member of Russell Masonic Lodge 177, the Russell Rotary Club, and was a life member of Russell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6240.

Preceding him in death were: parents, wife, and an infant sister. Survivors include: a son, James T. Harrell, wife Ranelle, Blue Springs, Mo.; a daughter, Janice M. Chitwood, husband Gene, Independence; a sister, Katherine Simpson, Glenrock, Wyo.; two grandsons; and a great-grandson.

Pohlman-Heise Mortuary, Russell, in charge. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 20, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Russell, with Rev. Kevin Hopkins officiating. The interment will be conducted at the Russell City Cemetery, with military honors to be conducted by Russell VFW Post 6240. Published in the Dec. 17, 2004, Russell County News.
