Indian Wars: Mounted Rangers & 1st U.S. Dragoons
Mexican War: 1st U.S. Dragoons
Civil War: Field & Staff, 1st U.S. Cavalry & 2nd U.S. Cavalry

Enoch Steen was born on the farm of his parents, William and Catherine Steen, the third of five children. His family moved to Missouri when he was young, where he married Mary Rector early in 1824. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Mounted Rangers July 16, 1832, and assigned to the 1st U.S. Dragoons September 19, 1833. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant March 5, 1836, and to captain December 31, 1840. He was brevetted a major during the Mexican War for his performance at the Battle of Buena Vista in February 1847. Steen spent much of his military career exploring the west, leaving his name on many landmarks.* Sadly, his first wife Mary died while he was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, September 8, 1849. Two years later Enoch married the widow, Mrs. Mary E. (Selkirk) Walsh October 7, 1851. Captain Steen obtained a permanent promotion to major July 15, 1853, at which time he was transferred to Field & Staff, 2nd U.S. Dragoons. Major Steen was transferred to Field & Staff, 1st U.S. Dragoons, October 23, 1855, and posted to Fort Craig, New Mexico Territory. He proceeded from Fort Craig in September 1856 to establish the first U.S. military post within the territory of the Gadsden Purchase, located at Calabasas, christening it Camp Moore. The post was moved to a location above Sonoita Creek in 1857 and renamed Fort Buchanan. Major Steen was transferred out of Arizona in April 1858 and was posted to the Pacific Northwest. After the outbreak of the Civil War he was transferred to the 2nd U.S. Cavalry and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel September 28, 1861. After the death of his second wife in February 1862, Enoch submitted his retirement September 23, 1863, but was retained as commander of Fort Lyon, Colorado, until his replacement arrived sometime about 1867. Soon thereafter he married the widow, Mrs. Amelia L. (McGee) Evans March 4, 1869, and retired to Kansas City, Missouri, where he remained until he died.
