Summers, of Wheaton, was so seriously injured by the overturning of an automobile in which he and Mrs. Summers were riding, near Abilene, December 1, that he died about twelve hours after the accident. Dr. and Mrs. Summers were returning to their home when something went wrong with the steering apparatus of the car which became uncontrollable and ran into a ditch by the side of the road and upset. A vertebra of the neck of Dr. Summers was fractured, causing the death shortly after midnight Monday, December 1. He was 64 years, 3 months and 23 days old at the time of his death.

In 1890 he began the pursuit of his chosen profession, graduating from Marion Sims College of Medicine at St. Louis, Missouri, in May 1893. In August, 1900, he with his brother, William purchased the drug store in Wheaton. From that time he continued to practice medicine, ministering to the needs of the people of his community until his death. Aside from his medical duties he took a deep interest in all works for the betterment of the community and the church.
