Matilda is a daughter of Major Paul Chapin and his third wife Rebecca Waters.

From the "Greenfield Vedette" January 30, 1902--

Mrs. Matilda McMasters, aged 79 years, 2 months and 14 days, died at her home near Dadeville Friday night. She leaves a surviving sister, Elizabeth Carmack, who is in her 93rd year. The sisters were daughters of Major Paul Chapin, a drummer boy of the Revolutionary War, later Major in the War of 1812.

February 13, 1902-- James H Goodnight and Scott McMasters were at the county seat last Tuesday attending to business in the probate court. Mr. Goodnight was appointed administrator of the estate of Matilda McMasters deceased. The home of Mr. Scott McMasters is near Garfield, Washington, and he came to this county some weeks since for the purpose of taking his mother back with him to that state, when her death occurred as told in this paper at the time. Another son, Mr. J. McMasters, who also lives near Garfield, was called to this county by his mother's death and is still here.
