"FINE PIONEER CITIZEN IS TAKEN BY DEATH, (Subhead) Memorial Service For James Henry Winkley, Last Of The Pioneer Thomas Winkley Family, Held Wenesday Morning. (Text) "J.H. Winkley was taken by death at his home Monday morning, August 4, 1947, at about 4:30. Although he had been in failing health for many months, his death was unexpected. He was 82 years old at the time of his passing, having celebrated a birthday two weeks earlier.
"Memorial service were conducted from the Thompson Funeral Home at 10:00 Wednesday morning, August 6, 1947, in charge of Reverend A.R. Poe, Hesston, Kansas, former pastor of the Aulne church.
"Miss Doroty Pollitt and Miss Ruth Jo Wilming sang two hymns, accompanied by Miss Viola Thompson.
"Mrs Adolph Foth and Mrs. Robert Richmond assisted with the flowers.
"Pallbears were Robert Wegerer, Adolph Foth, Edmund Sandwell, Laurence Winkley, Robert Richmond and Joe Winkley.
"Interment was at Gard cemetery.
"James Henry Winkley, second son of Thomas and Marry (sic) Ann Morton Winkley, was born near Spring Mountain,(Monroe township) Coshocton County, Ohio, July 21, 1865.
"His family came to Kansas in 1874 locating nine miles southwest of Marion. He took advantage of the eduction which was offered in those pioneer days.
"He was united in marriage with Clara M. Kannengiesser on June 1, 1898. To this union were born four children: Grace (Mrs. Louis Larsen), Peabody; Alice (Mrs. Ben Klus), Livermore, California; Earl, Stafford; and Ernest, Coats. In the year 1913, he with his family moved to Marion, where he entered the automobile and hardware business, continuing in this until he retired in 1928.
"In early manhood he accepted his Savior and later united with the First Baptist church of Marion, where he served his Master faithfully.
"As the last surviror of the Thomas Winkley family, he was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Robert, John, and Charles; and his sisters, Mary, Elizabeth, Margaret and Rebecca. He leaves to mourn his passing in addition to his wife and children, five grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.
"Mr. Winkley gave of his time and efforts to the betterment of his community as an officer in his rural school dustrict, as a member of the Marion Hospital Board, and as one who was ever willing to support worthy causes."
