Mr. Herbert Barron Akins, 89, of Griffin, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011.

Mr. Akins was born on July 23, 1921, in Griffin, Ga., to the late Seaborn Lumpkin Akins and the late Sallie Belle Willis Akins. Mr. Akins was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Seago Akins. Mr. Akins was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served during World War II. He was a retired engineer with the State of Georgia Department of Transportation. Mr. Akins was a member of Woolsey Baptist Church, and a member of the Marine Corps League.

Mr. Akins is survived by his children and their spouses, Debbie and Charlie Baumgardner, Alice and Max Shoupe, David Akins, and Tommy Akins; grandchildren, Ebony Johnson, Jamie Baumgardner, Bryan Shoupe, Jared Akins, and Ivey Watkins; great-grandchildren, Devin Witt, Crystal Tidwell, Tyler Tidwell, and Caleb Watkins; sister, Alice Akins Sauls; brother, Rufus Akins; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Herbert Akins will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at Woolsey Baptist Church. The Rev. Chuck Chambers, the Rev. Rick Brown and the Rev. Lee Mabry will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit the family from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Akins will lie in state from 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of service at Woolsey Baptist Church.
