Hannah Pettijohn was a daughter of Thomas and Ruth Pettyjohn Pettyjohn who were fourth cousins.

Thomas's Pettyjohn's brother, John Pettyjohn, had married a window by the last name of McCalgin, who had a son named David, who was four years old. John either legally adopted David or David assumed the Pettijohn name. No documents have been found of a legal adoption.

Hannah and David married and had children, though the little bit of information we have of her personal life is written in a biography by her brother Jonas and a letter home written by David.

David's letter shows concern about her welfare and that of their children. In the letter he mentions that he heard she had gone to Indiana (from Illinois) to a doctor, had dropped a couple of the children off at the homes of friends on the way and had taken the youngest, Edwina, with her.

We are assuming the "doctor" was her brother Amos Pettijohn, who had a practice in Indiana at the time and she would have trusted him. Mentions of family members state that Hannah died in Indiana. It's not known at this time if Hannah ever knew of her husband's letter.

Hannah and David died within a short time of each other. Their daughter, Lucetta, my great grandmother, was raised by her aunt, Sarah Pettijohn Huggins. It's not known by me who raised the other children. Perhaps someday we'll learn.

David and Hannah Pettijohn were the parents of the following children:
Lucetta Theresa Pettijohn (1849 - 1893)
Benjamin Franklin Pettijohn (1851 - 1922)
Sarah Elizabeth Pettijohn (1854 - )
Edwina Crall Pettijohn (1857 - )
