Martha Rose was the daughter of Rev. Andrew Carlo and Martha Susan Newton Swofford.

The following was taken from the Oct. 21, 2004 edition of THE SHELBY STAR:

Mrs. Martha Rose Swofford, 87, formerly of Forest City, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at home after a long illness.

Born in Morganton, she was a daughter of the late Rev. A. C. and Martha Susan Swofford. She was a first-grade schoolteacher for 35 years. Most of her teaching years were in Ellenboro and Forest City. When she retired in 1974, she moved to Alexandria to be near her sister, Mrs. Sue Austin, who died two years ago. Anywhere she went she made many friends. She was a lifetime Methodist.

She is survived by a sister, Ava S. Thorneloe of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews who have loving memories of her storytelling.

A memorial service is today at Washington House in Alexandria. Burial will be in her family plot at Clover Hill United Methodist Church in Polkville.

Capital Funeral Home and Cremation Society of the Carolinas is in charge of arrangements.

***NOTE: Her birth and death dates were taken from the SSDI.
