Eleanor M. Otto (nee Kritzeck), age 94, of Winsted, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012.
A native and long-time resident of the area, Eleanor was the wife of the late Luke M. Otto. Up until 10 days before her death, she was able to spend her days at the family farm, where she was cared for and visited frequently by her 11 children.
Eleanor was born Oct. 26, 1917, the first of three children born to Joseph and Cornelia (Overman) Kritzeck on their farm three miles north of Winsted.
She began her education at the Victor Township country school through fourth grade, and then attended Holy Trinity Schools through graduation from high school.
After high school, Eleanor moved to Minneapolis and worked at a variety of positions including jobs at Northrup King, the Munitions Plant in Arden Hills, and the University of Minnesota Health Department.
Eleanor married Luke Otto of Lester Prairie Oct. 26, 1946, and they lived and worked at the family farm for the next 66 years, raising 11 children.
Eleanor was involved in many parish and community activities including memberships in Catholic Aid, Council of Catholic Women, McLeod County Homemaker Extension Group, St. Martha and St. Anne societies, and the American Legion Auxiliary in Winsted.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Luke; brothers Leo and Kenneth; daughter-in-law Connie; and a granddaughter, Helen.
Eleanor is survived by her children, Barbara of St. Paul, Christopher (Jane) of Lester Prairie, Charles of Minneapolis, Daniel (Fran) of Ames, IA, Michael of Anoka, Catherine (Kurt Vanden Branden) of Lake Elmo, Peter (Yan Wen) of Mahtomedi, Elizabeth (John David) of Stillwater, Eric of Maplewood, Margaret (David Marcouiller) of Portage, WI, and John (Patricia) of Stillwater; 23 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Chilson Funeral Chapel in Winsted Tuesday, Feb. 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. A parish rosary was recited at 4 p.m., and there was a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial took place Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted, concelebrated by the Revs. John Laurance, S.J. and Tony Hesse. Interment was at the Holy Trinity Catholic cemetery.
Eleanor's nine granddaughters served as honorary pallbearers. Casket bearers were six of her grandsons.
