Ruth was born July 18, 1923, on a farm south of Meno, OK to Omar Glenn and Mary Elizabeth (Swartz) Bergdall. She attended Forest Home School through 8th grade and graduated from Ames High School in 1940. She earned a two-year teaching certificate from Southwestern College, Winfield, Ks. in 1942 and taught her first year at Hill View, a one room school west of Winfield. While teaching there she met Don Ehmke who was home on furlough from the Army. The following three years, she taught in Wellington, KS and 'courted' Don through correspondence.
Ruth married Donald E. Ehmke, June 9, 1946, at Grace Methodist Church in Winfield. He preceded her in death December 28, 2010.
Ruth was a homemaker and farmwife until returning to Southwestern College and earning her four-year degree in 1967. She taught an additional 18 years in Wellington before retiring in 1985.
After retirement, Ruth and Don enjoyed traveling and volunteering, which included mission work in Kentucky and New Mexico. Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Mizpah/Seekers Sunday School Class. Ruth and Don lived on a farm west of Winfield for 61 years, before moving to Cumbernauld Village in 2006.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Don; brothers, Keith and Paul Bergdall, brother –in-laws Chuck Patton, Gerald Ehmke and Lewis Andrews; Sister in laws Mildred Andrews and Jean Ehmke; and 2 nieces
She is survived by Sons; Keith and wife Margaret Ehmke of Maple Grove , MN., Kim Ehmke of Winfield. Daughters Karen Bethune and husband David of Ringgold, GA., Sue Kennedy and husband Charlie of Wichita. Sisters Bertha Patton of Enid, OK, Betty Crabtree and husband Dee of Murfreesboro, TN. Grandchildren; Derek Dinoni, Dan Ehmke and wife Maria, Louis Kennedy, Ashlea Servi and husband Joe; five great grandchildren, four nephews and one niece
