Richard was born to Josiah K Terry and Mary Alice (Bullington) Terry, in Galena, Kansas.

Richard was first married to Nettie Maud Burris on February 23, 1913, in Cherokee County, Kansas. He may have later been married to Grace Carter, but that marriage did not last. He was married to Alma Ivory Birmingham at the time of his death and she informed his death certificate. She later married Mr. Peterson.

Richard and his wife Nettie Maud had a son, John Kelly Terry, born July 24, 1914, in Crestline, Kansas. Their daughter, Evaline Marie Terry, was born October 24, 1915, in Galena, Kansas.

At the time of his World War 1 draft registration in June 1917, he reported that he was caring for a dependent father and wife and a child.

He lived until 1940 in the Galena, Kansas/Joplin, Missouri, area.
